I have a friend who just pitched her show to a few incredible production companies. While they all seemed to respond to her show, nobody bit. She was told over and over again that TV wants BIG CHARACTERS… exactly what her show was lacking. You know what I’m talking about: Snookie, Guy Fieri, Tabitha Coffey.
My friend told me that while she wants to expand her hosting career even further (she currently has a series on air) she’s simply not willing to turn herself into a caricature. Are you?
I ask you this: do you know how far you’re willing to go to host a show?
Would you be a contestant on a show such as Survivor in hopes of parlaying it into something as consistent as what Elisabeth Hasslebeck has on The View?
Perhaps you’d consider going on a dating show such as The Bachelor like Bob Guiney because you’ve got hosting GSN shows in your eyes?
Would you be followed on a docu-style show such as Keeping up with the Kardashians in order to turn that fame into product placement deals and appearance fees?
No judgment on any of these choices, by the way. I just think it’s super important to know what you’re willing to do before being presented with the opportunities because these auditions will come your way. In fact, let your agent know what you’re willing to do, so that he/she doesn’t waste time pitching you for shows you’d never consider doing.
On the other hand, if this is precisely the route you want to go, there are tons of casting directors who exclusively cast contestants/reality show participants, so I’d make a list, check it twice and tell them how you’re naughty and not always so nice! Big characters, people! BIG characters!!!!
