AFTRA Votes Yea or Nay
Members’ votes are due today on AFTRA’s contract with the motion picture producers, and many who also hold SAG cards feel the pressure of conflicting negotiations. SAG leaders have urged AFTRA’s members to turn down the deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers, a rejection which would give SAG increased leverage in its own talks. Which deal is better? While the unions put on the squeeze, actors in the middle speak out.

A big decision is due Tuesday for members of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. They’re voting on a tentative contract agreement that AFTRA negotiators reached with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. More than half of AFTRA’s members are also members of the Screen Actors Guild. And SAG’s Hollywood leaders have campaigned to convince the joint cardholders to vote the AFTRA contract down. KPCC’s Brian Watt checked in with some actors caught in the middle at The Actors’ Network.

The Screen Actors Guild and its smaller sister union, the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, have been trying to hammer out individual contracts with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers for several weeks now. Unfortunately, the unions despise each other, which leaves working actors caught in the middle of a political cat fight. And that’s a tough predicament for many since, well, most Hollywood actors aren’t Will Smith. Consider this: According to a Los Angeles Times analysis, 72.1 percent of actors make less than $5,000 per year, and less than 2 percent of them make enough to own a Bentley.
